HTT manufactured parts for a small engine manufacturer. The manufacturer was sending the parts to another company for coating. This created challenges for the company with high costs, inconsistent quality, and bloated supply chain.

Facing the Challenges

At the heart of the issue were three key challenges. First, the use of multiple external vendors was driving up production costs. Every time the parts left our facility for coating, it added extra expenses and logistical complexity. Second, there were quality issues. Handling and processing by different vendors led to the coating quality not always meeting the customer’s standards. Finally, the supply chain had too many moving parts. Each step—multiple touches and transportation— increased the risk of delays and inefficiencies. The customer knew they needed a better solution, a cost-effective solution that would streamline operations while providing consistent quality.

Investing In Customer Satisfaction

To assist the small engine manufacturer with its challenges, we proposed that we bring the coating process in-house. This required an initial investment, but we felt it was a risk worth taking. By taking full ownership of both the manufacturing and coating, we could eliminate the need for an external vendor, reduce transportation costs, and ensure tighter control over quality.

To make this happen, we made key upgrades to our facility, including the installation of state-of-the-art coating equipment. Our team was also trained extensively to handle the new process, ensuring a smooth transition.

With the new system in place, we integrated the coating process into our existing manufacturing workflow. This not only simplified operations but also allowed us to monitor and maintain consistent quality at every stage of production. To ensure we met the company’s quality expectations, we established stringent quality control measures to maintain high standards throughout the production and coating processes.

Results

  • 20% cost reduction by consolidating the production and coating under one roof and eliminating transportation between vendors.
  • Quality consistency achieved by taking on coating and implementing stringent quality control measures in all processes.
  • Supply chain efficiency improved by reducing the complexity, resulting in more reliable on-time deliveries.
